This project allowed us to take three books written by Noble Laureate’s, and transform them into detailed covers that reflect & celebrate each book’s narrative, themes and how they are related, whilst being placed within a graphic vehicle to match.
I chose the author Kazuo Ishiguro & three of his books. My theme for this project was therefore about Broken Elements, Strength & Growth. I made my books out of broken china plates and red string as I felt they captured my Japanese inspired style, to create an elegant showpiece of his work. Each china piece is a symbol of the themes of sadness & fragility within his works. The red string that ties the china to the hand-made book borders acts as a symbol for the themes of holding on, not letting go and staying humble with strength.
I feel the combination of these elements complimented each other highly, especially when sitting on top of the red wooden stairs. I made them by hand and spray-painted them red to match the string, making the books pop in contrast. The stairs also symbolise the theme of growth and journeys, much like Ishiguro's books.
